Feed on the Faithfulness of God
We eat a lot of different things—chocolate, chips, popcorn, biscuits, etc… But we know from years of research that certain things are better for us than others—processed items tend to be harder on the body, but pretty much whatever grows from the earth or even what roams around on it or swims in it’s waters has significant nutritional value. From the beginning, God set up what was best for us. He provided from the earth what was going to be most healthful and beneficial to us. Anyone surprised by this? Nope, me neither.
However, there is actually more. God has other things for us to feast upon. No, they are not directly tied to our physical body, but they are tied to the nutrition and health of our soul: “Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness.” Psalm 37:3 (NKJV)
“…feed on His faithfulness…” When I read this recently in Psalm 37, it lit up my heart. Not only did it excite the Language Arts teacher part of me because of its excellent imagery, but…the idea is vivid and alive. We are to eat of God’s character, eat of the remembrances of what He has done in our lives and how He has time and time again come through, and we are to eat of His Word that reminds us of His faithfulness:
“For the word of the Lord is right and true; he is faithful in all he does.” Psalm 33:4 (NIV) “He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.” Psalm 91:4 (NIV) “The works of his hands are faithful and just; all his precepts are trustworthy. They are established for ever and ever, enacted in faithfulness and uprightness.” Psalm 111:7,8 (NIV) “Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:22,23 (NKJV) There are so many verses—Old and New Testament—that speak of God’s faithfulness…verses that we may consume and feed upon.
Today, let us eat of, partake in, feast upon…the faithfulness of God. Let us remember how He has steadfastly carried us through our trials and into our seasons of abundance; let us remember how He has never ever failed us nor let us down; let us remember how He has kept His promises to us; and let us remember His faithful love that encapsulates us and binds us to His grace.
