If you have met me, then you know that I have curly hair. It is probably my most distinctive physical characteristic. There are advantages and disadvantages to having curly hair, and one of the disadvantages is that it can become easily tangled and entangled. That being said, the other day, my hair got interlaced in the vine of a hanging plant. No matter which way I turned, my hair seemed to become more and more intertwined. My husband smiled at me and said, “Looks like you got caught-up in the vine.” Though he was observing my physical circumstance, something instantly clicked…yes, I was caught-up in the vine, but isn’t that the way it should be? Shouldn’t I be “caught-up” in the Vine?
Of course, I’m not referring to a plant vine like the one on which my hair was so easily entangled, but THE Vine—Jesus Christ (see John 15). It is good to get “caught-up” in Him—to be seized by Christ, gripped by His grace, hooked on His goodness, involved in His ministry, enraptured with His presence, captivated by His love… Upon salvation, we have been grafted into Him and His promises (Romans 11); this should bring us great joy.
If you find yourself not as enraptured with the Vine as you know you should be, examine things. Have you let little creeping vines from other sources weave their way into your life so that they are now interfering with your enthusiasm or passion for Christ? If so, begin to prune those things out—it may hurt, but it is necessary.
