He Holds all of the Days in His Hands
Control is such a delicate aspect of human nature. We can so easily employ it to our benefit and that of others; but we can also wield it in such a way as to destroy confidence and trust. And by “control”, I mean all aspects of the word–self-regulating, influencing, creating limits, boundaries, or validation, etc. We have been entrusted by our Creator with this powerful gift, but in truth, control has a leash that only goes so far. We have a measure of control in whether or not we make dinner or buy it out; we can even decide whether we will take this path in life or that one. At some point, though, we must recognize that even those things which we seem to have control over…we really don’t. (Read James 4:13-15)
Consider this passage: “That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, ‘Let us go over to the other side.’ Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, ‘Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?’ He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, ‘Quiet! Be still!’ Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, ‘Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?’ They were terrified and asked each other, ‘Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!’” Mark 4:35-41
When the disciples started their journey, they were probably confident, thinking “business as usual”. They most likely did not anticipate a dangerous situation, especially one that would so quickly come upon them and completely rob them of their control, influence, and power. But, here is the good news: In the midst of their circumstance, they cried out to the One who has control over ALL things and who has dominion over ALL–JESUS! And He calmed the wind and the waves…and their fears.
Today, remember…Jesus is already aware of issues that surround us; let us submit our concerns, cautions and worries to Him…the One who holds all of our days in His hands.
