Pushing the Reset Button
There are some days I cannot wait until the sun sets. I eagerly anticipate that moment when I can fall into bed and be done with the day; that moment when I can turn out the lights, snuggle under the warmth of the comforter and call it a night. Sometimes, the passing of the night helps to assuage the heaviness or tiredness of the previous day…like pushing a “reset” button, but sometimes it does not. Sometimes, the “reset” comes in the morning in the “getting ready for the day” process—a hot shower, fresh clothes, worship music on the radio, but sometimes it has little effect.
Most often, however, the truest and most constant “reset” happens for me upon exiting my car at work. The glowing rays of the sunrise capture my attention. The fresh, crisp morning air fills my senses; a sudden and immediate repose settles in my being. The river of my thoughts halts; the pending weight of the day is removed, and, in that moment, it is enough to gaze upon the Master’s creation, to behold the steadiness of His hand as He gently lifts the golden orb into its place in the sky, to witness His handprint on the lavender, orange and pink clouds sprinkled across the horizon… It captivates my soul. I can feel the calming Presence of the Lord and hear in the quietness an echo, “His mercies are new every morning…” In an instant, all feels well again. I, unencumbered, can face the day.
Consider Jeremiah’s words: “I remember my affliction and my wandering, the bitterness and the gall. I well remember them, and my soul is downcast within me. Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, ‘The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.’ The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.” Lamentations 3:19-26
Today, remember these gifts from God: His compassions to you never fail; His mercies toward you are new every morning. GREAT…is His faithfulness to you.
