The Source of Life
In my work environment, the temperature tends to be very chilly. I often shiver and get the chills, and sometimes I even resort to wearing winter-ish type clothing when it is actually quite warm outside. One day, not too terribly long ago, I left the building where I work to run an errand. Upon crossing the threshold of the building’s exit, I was greeted immediately with golden, toasty rays of sunshine. They quickly began to thaw my frozen body, and as the warmth of the sun seeped into my skin, I was reminded of a commonly known fact—one my students love to recite when they would like to have class outside—that our bodies need vitamin D to survive, and one of the most excellent sources of vitamin D just happens to be the sun.
As this vital tidbit crossed my mind on this day, I began to think about the correlation to The Son. In much the same way that we need nourishment from the sun, so we also need nourishment from the Son of God! Jesus himself says, “…I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty…I am the bread of life…I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever…” John 6:35, 48, 51a Jesus also states, “…Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” John 4:13,14
Jesus is not only the source of our nourishment, He is the source of all life. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.” John 1:1-4
Remember…we need the Son of God, Jesus Christ. Without Him, we cannot survive. He is our Source for Life and Salvation. Today, spend time with Him and bask in the warmth of His Presence and His Word.
