Willing Hearts
Yesterday, a small group of us traveled to Cortez, CO, to meet with members of the church that we are partnering with there. The idea was to work together to pass out flyers advertising upcoming events at the church. We also were to pray with people as the Lord led, pray for the area as we walked the streets, and look for ways to minister to others, and that is exactly what we did. And it went according to plan…but not precisely how we planned. The Lord gave us a couple of surprises.
For example, we met a husband and wife also walking nearby, praying for the area, but they were specifically interceding for women that would be visiting the local abortion clinic one block away from the church. Their hearts were passionate and pure and they deeply longed to be able to share the Grace of God with hurting women. With them, we had an uplifting and exhilarating conversation and then a small prayer meeting as we circled up in front of the church and prayed.
There were other unique moments…unexpected times of prayer led by the Spirit of God as we walked the streets, opportunities to pray with individuals, even helped a young woman carry her groceries home. We were able to have meaningful conversations, make connections and build rapport with locals, and I truly believe that all of this was part of God’s plan. We showed up with willing hearts and a general plan and God orchestrated our steps.
But isn’t this how God works? Scripture, especially Proverbs, clearly speaks to this: “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” Proverbs 16:3 “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” Proverbs 16:9 “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.” Proverbs 19:21 “A person’s steps are directed by the Lord. How then can anyone understand their own way?” Proverbs 20:24
Today, let’s ask God to give us willing hearts. Let’s show up and be ready to do His will. Let’s allow Him to lead us in ministering to others and watch while He does amazing things.
